Tuesday marked election day for three cities in the Mat-Su, and the closest race is in Houston.
In the race for Houston City Council seat C, challenger Wayne Oliver leads current city Mayor Carter Cole by just a single vote, according to the unofficial results released Tuesday night. Oliver leads 92-91. There was one write-in vote.
There are three seats on the city council up for election. Houston is a second-class city. The residents do not vote for the position of Mayor. Once the council is certified, they determine the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Council seats D and G have only one candidate each on the ballot. But in the race for seat G, there are 105 write-in votes. The candidate on the ballot, Laurie Faubert, has 72 votes. There have been 65 write-in votes in the race for seat D. Kent Mitchell leads that race with 110 votes.
The Canvas Board meets on Friday and the election will be certified during a special meeting Oct. 7.
In Palmer, John Alcantra and Victoria Hudson hold the lead in the race for a pair of seats with a three-year term. Alcantra has 119 total votes, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night. Hudson has 113. Alcantra is an incumbent.
There was a 6% voter turnout.
The remaining three candidates on the ballot — Nathan Bradford (91 votes), Aundra “Omega” Jackson (47 votes) and Jameson Corbin (11 votes) — follow.
The Canvas Board will meet Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 10 a.m. each day to review absentee, early, questioned and special needs ballots, according to the city. The Palmer City Council is scheduled to certify the election results Oct. 8.
In Wasilla, incumbents Cathy Cottle and Stuart “Stu” Graham are running unopposed in their seats for three-year terms.
Cottle received 98 votes in the race for seat A and Graham has 94 in seat B.
The voter turnout in Wasilla is at 3.2%
The preliminary election results are expected to be updated on Friday, according to the city, and the results are scheduled for certification at the city council meeting on Oct. 14.
