Lloyd Smith is a Mat-Su Valley Vietnam veteran with a love for history and storytelling. Following is the story of his father Lloyd T. Smith Sr. and his uncle Francis E. Smith’s service during World War II in the 450th Bomb Group, 720th Bomb Squadron. Francis kept a technical journal of each of the 50 missions he flew during the war. Some missions had more than one destination and counted double. On the 10th-11thmission, Francis was the waist gunner on another plane when he saw the plane his brother was flying in get shot down. Lloyd Sr. survived eight months as a German prisoner of war. This is their story of service in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
