Accidental shooting leads to warrant arrests

A Wasilla man who accidentally shot himself in his home Friday but did not seek medical attention was arrested Sunday on four outstanding warrants when troopers came to check on him.

Wayne Kallman, 50, apparently shattered a bone in his left leg accidentally as he cocked a small-caliber handgun. The incident occurred Friday night in his home off Hollywood, but Kallman treated his own wound rather than going to the hospital, a concerned caller told dispatchers.

The person said Kallman was in "bad shape," had not left his home and was "possibly dying."

Trooper Dean Hall said he went to the home and tried to make contact but there was no answer. Since he was making a welfare check, the trooper was able to enter the home and speak with Kallman.

Kallman reportedly told Hall he was taking antibiotics for the wound after he dressed it himself. He declined to give details about how the accident occurred, according to the police report.

An ambulance transported Kallman to Valley Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He was then taken to Cook Inlet Pretrial in Anchorage, where he was jailed on the four arrest warrants totaling $26,000. One warrant for $10,000 was issued in connection with a felony case. He is scheduled to be transported from Anchorage's Cook Inlet Pretrial Facility to Palmer Superior Court for his arraignment today.

Court records show Kallman had previous convictions on assault and fourth-degree theft along with two drunken-driving convictions between 1994 and 2001.
