907 Ammo is Alaska’s first ammunition retailer focusing on and dedicated to online sales of ammunition that ship right to the customer’s front door.

Owners James and Meredith Lewis started their business as a response to the lack of ammunition availability and the high prices in Alaska. Located off the Old Seward Highway in Anchorage, this veteran-owned company is able to sell and ship ammunition from its website, 907ammo.com, to customers living along Alaska’s road system.

“One reason we started this was our frustration with ammo prices in Alaska compared to the prices you would see online in the lower 48,” James said “We can't solve many of the world’s problems, but I felt like we could at least help this one here in Alaska.”

James and Meredith moved to Alaska in 2012 when James was in the Army and stationed at Fort Richardson. The two met as competitive shooters in college; Meredith at the University of Mississippi and James at the United States Military Academy. With backgrounds in shooting, the two were surprised at the lack of ammunition options in Alaska.

“The first thing we noticed when we got up here was the struggle in the availability of ammunition because we were pretty used to ordering online with doorstep delivery,” James said.

The couple moved out of Alaska when James received orders to move to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and then Fort Hood in Texas. They returned to Alaska in 2017 where James continued to serve in the National Guard as an Engineer. Together, James and Meredith used their previous work experience and started working on a plan on how to get this business started in Alaska.

“We both have backgrounds in shooting, hunting, and IT,” Meredith said. “You merge it all together and it set us up with a good foundation to put this all in place.”

After Covid and the rise in popularity with online shopping and home delivery options, the two decided to pull the trigger on the business. They continued work on their plan and their website went live in May of 2024. Meredith explained how they have been welcomed and supported by many other small businesses in Alaska.

The business has now grown from a dozen products at launch to currently over 300 different products and a dozen different brands on their website. James explained that they offer what their customers want, taking requests and recommendations on their website and working with manufactures to bring new items to the state. They work to provide ammunition for a variety of consumers, from hunters to competitive shooters and law enforcement.

“Everything that's in our selection has been 100% based off of feedback from our customers,” James said.

907 Ammo focuses strictly on ammunition, Meredith explained. While the business offers some of the same options as other outdoor stores, they have the unique opportunity to sell brands and calibers otherwise difficult to purchase in the state. They are an exclusive retailer for Bone Frog Ammunition and Super Vel in Alaska. They have also partnered with Fairbanks-based 49th Cartridge Company, another veteran-owned business, to more widely distribute some of their Alaska-tailored rounds.

907 Ammo offers $10 flat rate shipping to physical addresses along the road system. This does not include some rural areas or villages for the time being, nor P.O. Boxes per shipping regulations. They are working on streamlining deliveries to more remote areas in the future. Their orders ship quickly, often reaching customers the next day.

“If they make a purchase we get it out generally the same day if it's before 2 p.m. in the afternoon,” James said. “It's delivered on their doorstep the following day. If you live on the road system, it can be less than 24-hour delivery.”

James and Meredith operate the business themselves. They store ammunition and ship orders from their warehouse in Anchorage. 907 Ammo does not have a storefront, an intentional move to keep business costs low and thus prices lower for the consumer. They plan to hire on employees as they continue to grow with a focus on hiring other veterans.

907 Ammo sponsors youth shooting sports, events and veteran’s organizations. They work to give back to the shooting and hunting community in Alaska. Meredith explained how after moving around with the military and working remotely for her entire career, it is nice for their family to settle down in such a supportive community.

“I think it's been incredibly well received by Alaskans,” Meredith said. “This is a very special community to have a small business in.”

907 Ammo will be at the Wasilla High School Outdoor and Gun Show on Jan. 18 and 19, the Safari Club International Banquet at the Dena’ina Center Feb. 21 and 22, and the Mat-Su Outdoorsman Show April 11-13 at the Menard Center.

With quick shipping times and a diverse product availability from this local small business, 907 Ammo is Alaskan’s new alternative option for purchasing ammunition right from the comfort of home.

“Our slogan is, ‘The Last Frontier’s Online Ammo - Delivered,’” Meredith said.
