BIG LAKE — Less than a week after the Sheep Mountain 150 was cancelled due to lack of snow, organizers of a local race announced there will be a sled dog race this weekend.

The Alaska Excursions 120 is slated to start Saturday at 10 a.m. at Martin Buser’s Happy Trails Kennel near Big Lake. The race will continue Sunday, with the first musher leaving Happy Trails at 10 a.m.

About 30 teams are slated to participate in the event, which features a $10,000 purse. Four-time Iditarod champion Jeff King leads a field that also includes Iditarod veterans such as Cim Smyth, Ken Anderson and Ryan Redington. The event consists of two heats of about 42 miles each, according to the race website, alaskaexcursions.com. Money will be awarded for the top 3 finishers on each day, and the top 5 overall. Awards are scheduled for Sunday after the finish of the last team.
