AK Fish & Game launches mobile app

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has launched a new mobile app that allows hunters and anglers to purchase and store licenses, check regulations, and find information on the map.

The mobile app provides people wanting to hunt and fish the ability to record hunting and fishing harvests in the field, and to report personal use fishing harvest. But more, it will allow people to obtain and display licenses, permits, stamps & tags; record and report fish and game harvest; and access regulations. The site also reports that the ability to receive notifications about areas of interest are forthcoming.

Additional features on the app include sections for a species identification guide, complete with images and text descriptions of commonly targeted sport fish species; definitions, regional and statewide methods and means, prohibited acts and other necessary regulatory content.

Once the app has been downloaded, users will be able to use their existing ‘myADFG’ or ‘myAlaska’ account, using their username and password. All others will have to create an account to log-in.

The mobile app is in the initial launch phase, meaning that additional work is being done to ensure future versions of this application best serve those who hunt and fish in Alaska. Future versions will download automatically to your device.

A quick perusal on social media showed that most had favorable reception to the idea. Of course, some will stick to paper and pen as well. ADF&G reminds people that if users are concerned that a loss of cell service, or the device itself, while hunting/fishing, people may carry a paper copy as well. However, if people have both, remember to record any required harvest on the paper copy as well as in the app.

The mobile app will be available as a free download in the Android and Apple App stores and can be used on a smart device such as iPhone, Android phone, iPad, or Android tablet.
