Alaska Job Corps Race draws strong turnout

MAT-SU — Christopher Ashland and Bob Davis won their divisions in Saturday’s ninth annual Job Corps Race. Under sunny skies and a light breeze, Ashland posted a time of 18:42 in the 5-K event while Davis ran the 10-K in 41:29, beating his last year’s winning time of 41:45. Signe Johnson of Palmer lead the field of women with a time of 25:37 in the 5-K, and Jill Aho of Palmer ran the 10-K in 48:17.

Organizers at Job Corps had the 5-K race measured and certified in 2009, which has made it a draw for runners wanting to gauge their speed in late May and adjust training before entering other runs later in the season. Others, like second-place 10-K finisher Tom Luchsinger, run the race to try something new.

“I’m getting too old to play soccer, and I have to come up with a new way to stay in shape,” he said after his first 10-K Saturday. Luchsinger’s time was 46:17.

In all, 84 entered the Job Corps race, which offers the running and walking events. Job Corps student government organized the race in 2003 as a fundraiser for other local youth organizations. Profits from the race this year will go to Alaska Project Linus, a Wasilla-based program that donates handmade blankets to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, at-risk youth and senior citizens locally and throughout Alaska.
