Alaska POW/MIA ceremony planned

MAT-SU -- Friday is Alaska POW/MIA Day, and at the Veterans' Wall of Honor, a ceremony will honor them, and all veterans, for their service to America.

In wake of last week's terrorist attack in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, a special ceremony will be held prior to the POW/MIA ceremony. The ceremonies begin at 1 p.m. Friday, at the Veterans' Wall of Honor near the Mat-Su Convention & Visitors Bureau.

"We thought of canceling the ceremony altogether, but we felt we could pay tribute to the victims of the attack in a special ceremony," said Charlie Huggins, an organizer of the event.

The honored guests at the POW/MIA ceremony include Robert Brisbin of Wasilla, Walt Fergus of Wasilla, Laurence Larson of Palmer, William Plate of Wasilla and Joseph Smith of Trapper Creek, all former prisoners of war.

Veterans, families and patriotic Americans are invited to attend the ceremony to recognize the price paid by former POW and MIAs in paving the way for freedom that every American enjoys.

For more information about the ceremony, interested people may contact Huggins at 373-6419.
