WASILLA — The Alaska Salmon Runners can return home happy after beating hundreds of teams in Scandinavia this past weekend.

Over four days, the 17-person team of male and female runners with ties to Alaska traversed 213 miles through Sweden and Norway on foot in 45 hours, 2 minutes and 29 seconds, landing them in 46th place overall out of 164 finishing teams.

Among the Alaska Salmon Runners were local grads Cody Priest and Allan Spangler, who ran a combined nine of the 51 relay legs, which varied in distance from 3.5 kilometers (2.17 miles) to 11.7k (7.27). Spangler’s girlfriend, Nina Schwinghammer, ran four legs.

Spangler and Schwinghammer are in the middle of a European bicycle tour with no return date set yet, but Priest will likely be back by the end of the month to continue coaching cross country at Chugiak High School.
