JUNEAU — The organization of one body of the 32nd Alaska Legislature has taken place as the 13 Senate Republicans announced a majority on the first day of the Legislative session on Tuesday. The Alaska House of Representatives has yet to announce organization and did not meet on Wednesday.
Representing Palmer and Chugiak in the Senate in Seat F, Sen. Shelley Hughes was named Majority Leader.
“The caucus is based upon a Caucus of Equals” philosophy, recognizing the diverse nature of the group and the districts throughout the state represented by the members,” wrote Senate Majority Press Secretary Daniel McDonald.
The leadership of the 13-Senator Majority includes Senate President Peter Micciche in Seat O from Soldotna, Majority Whip Mia Costello in Seat K from Anchorage, Rules Chairman Gary Stevens in Seat P from Kodiak, and Senate Finance Committee co-chairs Bert Stedman and Click Bishop.
The Senate Committee on Committees met on Wednesday and determined committee chairmanship and representation. Hughes will Chair the Community and Regional Affairs Committee as well as serving as Vice-Chair of Health and Social Services. Hughes will also serve on the Education, Judiciary and Rules Committees.
Sen.David Wilson, Representing Wasilla in Seat D will Chair the H&SS Committee and sit on Finance and Community and Regional Affairs. Representing one of the largest Senate Districts in Seat E, Senator Mike Shower will Chair the Senate State Affairs Committee and serve as Vice-Chair of the Judiciary and Transportation Committees.
