With tires squealing around every turn, the annual Alaska Sprint Tour "Outlaw Invasion" was a major attraction at Northstar Speedway Saturday. The racing action also included a couple of mishaps. During the first heat of action, coming out of turn four, Kenai's Cameron McGahan got tangled up with Bob Erdman, of Wasilla, as Erdman came out of the infield back onto the track. McGahan's 360 sprint car slid toward the retaining wall, hit it with the back end causing it to pop up on its back wheels and wheelie toward oncoming traffic before flipping onto its top in the infield.

The 17-year-old son of longtime racer Jackie McGahan said it was not his first wreck, but it was his first rollover. During his first race season last year he hit the wall once, due to a suspension problem that made steering difficult, he said. That time he was able to get the car off the track with minimal damage. This time was different, he said -- he knew he was going over.

"At first I thought I'd be able to dodge it, but when I hit the wall I knew," McGahan said.

Medics Toby Ann Mikalonis and James Hales, on hand from the Alaska Professional Volunteers Inc., checked him over after the crash.

"My legs are sore," McGahan said of his only apparent injuries. "The rest of me was strapped in pretty good, but my legs just bounced around."
