PALMER — This weekend at the Borough Gym on Denali Street in Palmer, the Alaska State Square and Round Dance Festival will take place over all three days this weekend. The festival is open to local cuers, callers, and guest cuers and callers are optional. The festival features workshops such as a round dance and square dance workshop and introduction to Hex.
Among the guest cuers will be Bob and Sally Nolen, who began dancing in 1972 and started teaching in Michigan in 1975. Both Bob and Sally cue and teach all phases of square and round dance. The Nolens conducted a round dance club and cued for square dances in Austin, Texas, and had a carousel club. Throughout the dancing career of Bob and Sally Nolen, they have actively served the dance community in various positions. Both have been members of Roundalab for 44 years and taken part in various state dance organizations, with both Nolen’s serving on the Board of Directors for Roundalab. They were awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 2019 and have been featured as instructors at festivals all over the country. The Nolen’s also developed a school for cuers in San Antonio, Texas.
