WASILLA — This summer is the first time hunters can use high-powered air rifles to harvest big game in Alaska.
“I think it’s about time. I think it’s been a long time coming,” Alaska Shooting Specialties owner David Roberts said.
Starting in July, hunters will be able to use air rifles for caribou and black-tailed deer.
This recent change in regulation resulted from the Alaska Board of Game’s approval of a recent proposal, according to Division of Wildlife Conservation Director, Eddie Grasser.
Grasser said that he has over 35 years of experience as a hunting guide. He said that he was impressed with the power and capabilities of modern air rifles during a demonstration last summer.
“The high caliber air rifles that we tested that day would compete with any muzzler loader,” Grasser said.
Roberts sells a variety of air rifles alongside conventional firearms through his Houston based business. He said that he’s currently pushing for widespread awareness and education about air rifles to ensure safe humane hunting practices since there’s an upward trend of air rifle use in Alaska.
“It’s getting bigger and bigger,” Roberts said.
Roberts is hosting an event at Alaska Shooting Specialties celebrating the new opportunity for Alaskan hunters. The Alaska Airgun Round and BBQ starts at 10:30 a.m. July 11, featuring prizes, giveaways, games, contests, and airgun industry representatives.
