A.W. Tozer said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” The most important subject ever to occupy the human mind is the profound study of God. No person’s life can rise any higher than his thoughts of God.
A high view of God inevitably leads to high and holy living but a low view of God leads to low living. Shallow, sentimental thoughts about God lead to a mediocre life at best. Everything rises or falls with our view of God. As you grow in the knowledge of God, you grow in your spiritual life.
The foundation of all truth is this: God is. God exists. It is upon this unshakable bedrock that all other trusts exist. How is this truth established? How do we know that God exists? The arguments for God’s existence fall into three broad groups.
The first argument is that God’s existence is intuitive within man. Planted within the soul of every person is a fundamental belief in the existence of God. It is placed there by God himself.
Man is inherently religious. This is seen all over the globe. All people everywhere are aware of eternity and a supernatural being. They may believe in the one, true God or have an empty, superstitious pursuit of a wrong form of God that is darkened by unbelief.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 reads, “He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts.” The Apostle Paul in Romans 1:19 wrote, “Because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.” Every person instinctively understands that God exists. Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds. There is no one who does good.”
The second argument is that God’s existence is asserted by Scripture. The Bible begins by declaring the fact of God’s existence. This most basic truth is assumed and stated throughout the pages of sacred Scripture. Nowhere does the Bible attempt to prove the existence of God. Instead, the Bible simply declares that he is God. Therefore, a belief in God is a belief in the Scriptures which declare that he is God.
How does the Bible begin? “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth …” (Genesis 1:1). John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The prophet Isaiah stated, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” God’s existence is clearly stated in Scripture.
The third argument is that God’s existence is supported by philosophy. Three philosophical arguments are advanced in Scripture. These philosophical arguments support the existence of God. The cosmological argument is very powerful. The fact that the world (“cosmos”) exists argues that there must be a Creator.
Creation necessitates a Creator. Something cannot come from nothing. Everything came from something and that something is Someone! An original cause must have existed that brought the universe into being. The world is a cause that requires an adequate cause and the only adequate cause is God.
Hebrews 3:4 says, “For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.” Psalm 19:1 reads, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of his hands.”
The teleological argument supports the existence of God. The order and design within the universe argue for a Master Designer. The teleological (telos “end”) argument says that the universe was created with intelligence, design and order. This fact argues for an intelligent Creator — one with creative genius.
Acts 14:17 reminds us, “And yet he did not leave himself without witness, in that he did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.” Psalm 94:9 asks, “He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?” Romans 1:20 says, “For since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”
Finally, the anthropological argument is very clear. Since man (anthropos) is a moral and intelligent being, he must be created by One who is also a moral and intelligent Being. Man’s inward moral nature argues for a Moral Being who created all men.
God does exist! He cares for you. He has spoken in the Bible. Read it! He sent his son Jesus to die for your sins upon the cross. Turn to him in repentance and faith. Be reconciled to him today.
