All-stars named

PALMER — Eleven Mat-Su Miners will play in the 2012 Alaska Baseball League All-Star Game today at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

Four pitchers and seven position players will compete for Team Gold in the game, which is set to start at 4 p.m. Clint Freeman, Jake Long, Andrew McGee and Jay Calhoun will pitch for Team Gold. Catcher PJ Torres; infielders Tino Lipson and Erik Harbutz; and outfielders Bill Cullen, Bobby Boyd and Ian Miller were also named to the squad.

Team Gold consists of players from the Mat-Su Miners, Chugiak Chinooks and Alaska Goldpanners. Team Blue includes athletes from the Anchorage Bucs, Anchorage Glacier Pilots and Peninsula Oilers.

The ABL All-Star Game is part of the final day of the ABL/MLB Showcase, which started Friday in Anchorage. The Showcase was designed to create a way for MLB scouts to see all six ABL teams in one venue over a weekend. Each of the teams played both Friday and Saturday in nonleague play.

The Showcase weekend also includes a home run derby, which starts today at 1 p.m. at Mulcahy. Three of Mat-Su’s all-stars — Cullen, Freeman and Torres — will compete in the event. Former Mat-Su Miners first baseman Adam Martin won the league’s first home run derby last summer.

The ABL is also preparing to release its all-league teams. The All-ABL teams, which are voted on by league coaches and broadcasters, is different than the list of league all-stars who will compete this afternoon.
