May 29, 2017 (Girdwood, AK) – Alyeska Resort is opening the mountain to uphill foot traffic, to the tram, for the first time of the spring/summer hiking season. The lower and mid-mountain trails have emerged from the snow and are now hikable. Sections between the top of Ted’s Express and the upper tram building are beginning to be navigatable with serveral snow crossings. Any hikers enjoying the mountain’s trails are advised to use caution when crossing the snow between the top of Ted’s Express and the tram building. Anyone hiking with dogs must have their pet(s) on leash when approaching the tram building and dogs must download in the kennels provided. Alyeska’s North Face Trail will remain closed until more snow melts out and the trail becomes passable.
“It’s always a great time of year here at Alyeska when the hiking trails start to show themselves after months of being buried,” states Brian Burnett, Ski Area General Manager. “Every summer we see lots of visitors and locals who take advantage of the hiking trails and the free tram ride down. This last winter was very cold and we had fantastic skiing top to bottom, as a result the trails have taken a little longer to melt out but we’re on track to start hiking up to the upper tram building on May 30.”
Hikers are encouraged to stop by the Bore Tide Bar for a quick snack or beer, many think of this as their mountaintop reward for their efforts.
Alyeska Resort will be hosting a 5k mountain fun run on Sunday, June 4 as part of the second day of the annual Fiddlehead Festival event. This uphill fun run will start at the Hotel Alyeska and follow a trail up Chair 7 to Race Trail to Upper Von Imhof to Jettway on to Main Street before finishing at the upper tram building. The run is free and starts at 10 a.m. All ages are welcome to participate.
