To the editor:
It is not often that I have the privilege of meeting someone who can simply touch my heart by just being. This weekend I had the rare privilege of meeting just such a person. Her name is Deb Sole. Deb is a cancer survivor. I received an invitation to attend a garden party hosted by Mrs. Sole. What a party it was: great food, fantastic weather and even a Champagne toast.
Gathered there were women from all walks of life, all shapes and sizes and varying backgrounds, celebrating just being healthy and alive. Many were survivors, some were caregivers and others were there to participate in all the activities.
In the age we have come to know as the “X Generation,” it seems that everyone is out for themselves, and yet here stands a woman who asked nothing of us other to join her in celebration, share our stories and raise our voices. Although she asked for no donations, she accepted donations from those attending, which were given to the American Cancer Society.
It was so gracious of Mrs. Sole and her husband to open their home to us. In a world where the headlines are mostly filled with tragedy and treachery, I thought it important to let people out there know that there are still some who give from the heart with no attachments.
It is Mrs. Sole’s hope that this will be an annual event, and I would like to let her know that both of us will attend next year — and boy are we looking forward to reacquainting ourselves with this group of great women. Thank you again.
