A 22-year-old soldier from Anchorage died last week during a training exercise in South Carolina, according to Army officials in Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Pvt. Gabriel J. Perez, an active-duty soldier in training assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, died during basic combat training on April 24, according to Fort Jackson media relations spokesperson Nathan Clinebelle.
Fort Jackson Commander Maj. Gen. Daryl O. Hood said in a statement, “We extend our condolences during this difficult time to all who knew Pvt. Perez.” He added that resources were available for the family of Perez and his peers as they deal with their grief in the aftermath of his death.
There was no immediate word on the cause of death, Fort Jackson officials said, but an investigation is currently underway. Next of kin have been notified by the Army.
