ANCHORAGE — The Anchorage Symphony Orchestra is putting on a special tribute concert paying homage to famous film score composer John Williams.
Led by guest conductor Lucas Waldin, The Magic of John Williams takes place at the Atwood Concert Hall, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, Feb. 10.
According to a press release, the concert will feature live performances of Williams' iconic music from movies such as "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial," "Indiana Jones," and "Superman."
One of America's most famous film directors, Steven Spielberg has worked closely with Williams since 1975. Williams scored the soundtracks to all but three of Spielberg's feature films.
Spielberg has stated in previous interviews: "Without John Williams, bikes don't fly, nor do brooms in Quidditch matches, nor do men in red capes. There is no Force. Dinosaurs do not walk the earth. We do not wonder, we do not weep, we do not believe."
According to the press release, Williams' collaboration with box office hits has acclaimed a prolific 53 Academy Award nominations.
Williams has won a total of five Academy Awards for "Fiddler on the Roof," "Jaws," "Star Wars," "E.T. The Extraterrestrial," and Schindler’s List." He also garnered three Emmys, seven BAFTAs, and four Golden Globes, and 24 Grammys.
President Barack Obama awarded Williams with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 for his major contributions to the field of music.
The Library of Congress recently archived thr "Star Wars" soundtrack in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Williams' work stretches beyond films.
For decades One could hear Williams' work each evening when "The Mission" opened the "NBC Nightly News."
Williams' collaboration with NBC showed up in their Sunday Night Football broadcast theme, the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and the 1987 International Summer Special Olympic Games.
Williams is still at it. According to the press release, he recently created an original score for ESPN’s NCAA Playoff National Championship broadcast.
Anchorage Symphony’s The Magic of John Williams starts at 7:30 p.m. Infrared headphones for the hearing impaired will be available at the concert.
