Andrew Edward Mosby, Jr. was born February 13, 1960, to Thelma Mae Whiting-Mosby and Andrew Edward Mosby, Sr. at Elmendorf Air Force Base, AK, and he passed February 1, 2021, at the Providence Medical Center in Anchorage, AK. He was 60.
Andrew has 3 siblings and their names in order of birth are as follows: Homer “Happy” Ransom (Margarita), Bessie Ransom-Mosley (Emanuel), and Andrea Norris (Thomas).
Andrew was a running back for and graduated from East Anchorage High School in 1978. He continued his dream as a student athlete and played for and attended Treasure Valley Community College. He transferred to, played football for, and graduated from, San Francisco State University in 1984.
Andrew was a lifetime learner and continued taking many courses at UAA and various national certification courses. Andrew was also an active member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He loved his brotherhood and the many close brothers he gained. These friendships have lasted decades!
The support his fraternal brothers and football teammates have showered upon our family after hearing that Andrew transitioned has been phenomenal! I am sure he is smiling from above! The prayers, support, uplifting words of comfort, and funny stories strengthened us and we thank you for that.
Andy was also an exceptional football player, coach, and Superfan! He loved FOOTBALL! He could watch football 24/7 if you let him! He coached Pop Warner Football, was assistant coach for local high schools, and was the NFL’s Punt, Pass and Kick State Chair of Alaska for 25 years. He was also an outstanding bowler!
Andrew had a wonderful career that always allowed him the opportunity to work with the youth of Alaska. He worked as a Safety and Security Coordinator for the Mat-Su Day School, Juvenile Justice Officer with DJJ, Youth Services Facility Director for the Department of Defense, Substitute Teacher for both the Mat-Su Borough and Anchorage School Districts, Alaska Club — Front Desk and Operations Manager, UAA’s Pre-College Programs Education Upward Bounds advisor, Athletic Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs, and UAA — Director of Intramural Sports and Sports Center Facility Supervisor.
On August 1, 2003 Andrew married Myrtle “Sonora” Lewis of Anchorage, AK. Andrew brought to the union Andrew, III, and Sonora brought Michael, Marcellus, Sydney, and her mother Lois. Shortly thereafter they welcomed their youngest child Jai’Elle. A few years later, we had a visit with the family court when Andrew adopted Sydney. We are in the process of adopting our nephew, Emanuel, IV, and niece, Onna. Andrew loved our blended family life and stepped out on faith when it came to raising self-sufficient, critical thinking, educated, athletic, and God loving children into adulthood!
Andrew also loved jazz music and dancing! He was smooth as silk! Dressed to the nines, looking good and smelling fine was his thing!
Entertaining friends and family was his way of spreading the love! OMG, how he loved to cook, and we loved his cooking!
His organizational skills were to be envied.
Andrew gave his life to Christ at New Hope Baptist Church as a youth, attended Friendly Church of God and Christ and Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Anchorage, and last year joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Palmer where he was a Deacon in Training. Andrew loved the Lord and the Lord certainly loves him! His spirit of service is something to live up to. He was always giving of himself and time to everyone. He didn’t simply spend time with you, he invested time in you. His selfless acts towards others are too many to mention.
Andrew was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, sister, Bessie Ransom-Mosley; brother, Homer “Happy” Ransom; and nephew James Mosby of Anchorage, AK.
Andrew enjoyed the outdoors where he would fish and was looking forward to hunting. But most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Andrew is survived by wife, Myrtle “Sonora” Lewis-Mosby; children, Andrew Mosby, III, Sydney Floyd-Mosby, Jai’Elle Mosby, Michael Reed, II (Allison), Marcellus Smith, II (Estelle), Emanuel Mosley, IV, and Onna Mosley; grandchildren, Trinity and Caleb Reed; and sister, Andrea Norris (Thomas).
Let’s celebrate his life and 61st birthday together as he would have loved!
