To the editor:
In response to several current stories throughout the state, I note that Alaska desperately needs statewide laws that protect animals from abuse.
Twelve dogs left on chains with no water for days during the hottest month is abuse, and 150 dying dogs at a kennel is abuse.
Allowing hybrids to be released into our communities can harm pets and individuals.
As a community of Alaskans, I feel we need to speak with our state representatives to pass legislation to protect man’s best friend and other animals. These laws would help our law enforcement agents to prosecute animal abusers.
Without statewide legislation, many violators never face any repercussions for their offenses. Studies have shown those who commit crimes against animals will also commit crimes against people.
Our state is way behind the national standard, so let’s get some laws on the books that protect our animals and our greater community.
