Wasilla resident Ann Marie Madeux, 83, died of natural causes May 15, 2003, at Azure Crest Assisted Living in Wasilla.

A family memorial and tree dedication was held Sunday, May 18. Her ashes will be scattered in Cortez, Colo., at a later date.

Mrs. Madeux was born Feb. 16, 1920, in Hastings, Okla.

She attended school in Yellow Jacket, Colo.

She had lived in Alaska since 1980 residing in Hyder, Ketchikan and Wasilla.

During her life, Mrs. Madeux worked in domestic services, in a munitions plant during World War II, as a dietitian at Fitzsimmonds Army General Hospital, as a waitress for Sky Chef at Stapleton Airport in Denver and at Windsor Gardens, Lowry Air Force Base, and she assembled semi-conductors for Fairchild Corporation. She retired as a caregiver in 1998.

Mrs. Madeux was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Aurora, Colo.

She was a member of the Epsilon Sigma Phi Sorority.

Mrs. Madeux enjoyed gardening, quilting, hiking, fishing, camping, going to garage sales and flea markets.

Her family said, "Ann loved to travel. She traveled extensively in Europe and developed interests in historical sites, art and antiques. She bought many fine pieces at auction when the old estates of Great Britain broke up after the war. She was adventuresome and independent. She loved her family and often went to spend time with them. She took great pride in her home, always having lovely plants, flowers and gardens. Her collection of nic-nacs, mementos, art, etc. went with her wherever she moved."

Mrs. Madeux is survived by her daughter Roberta Shields of Ketchikan; son, Gary Madeux of Jacksonville, Fla; sisters Pearl Bishop of Lewis, Colo., Dessie Jaskewicz of Monroe, N.J., Sarah Weilbacher of Yakima, Wash., Della Richardson of Tempe, Ariz., Dorothy Jones of Phoenix, Ariz., Arlene Strubel of Enid, Okla., and Doris Vaughn of Enid, Okla.; brothers, Russel Aulston of Yellow Jacket, Colo., and Johnny Aulston of Washington; grandchildren, Nina Arvin and her husband, Ronald of Wasilla; Tanya Kocinski of Wasilla, Carman Kocinski of Hollywood, Calif., Mike, Mark and Sharla Madeux of Florida; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Rosie Aulston, and her brother Ray Aulston.

Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
