Saturday night, the roads of Big Lake lit up as floats and vehicles made their way through the heart of town as part of the Big Lake Lions’ 8th Annual Parade of Lights.
“Others have done it in the past, and this is the first year that the Big Lake Lions has sponsored the parade,” said Heather Davis, co-chair of the parade.
“It’s just gotten bigger over the years,” she said, among the dozens of vehicles that were lined up and ready to go.
Davis said the turnout was better than expected, and she was pleased that the parade had gone over so well.
“It was great, we had a record turnout from the community, and look forward to more next year.”
There were several musical acts to provide a festive soundtrack for the many parade watchers that had braved the cold to come out and watch the colorful lights go by.
One of the groups belting out Christmas carols was the Big Lake Elementary Choir.
“We’ve done this since before there was a parade, when it was simply a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, and the Fire Station before that,” said Christina Hardman, the Music Teacher at Big Lake Elementary.
“We have so much fun doing it!”
Some of the other participants included United States of America's Mrs. Alaska 2024, Double T Farms, Denali
NST Heavy Haul, Elk Services, Big Lake Neighborhood Closet
HAB Academy, STR Alaska, and Alaska House of Yamaha
Of course, what Christmas parade would be complete without Santa, and for this event, Santa was hitching a ride with the West Lakes Fire Department to bring cheer to all who came out for the parade.
The parade ended at the Big Lake Rec Center, where there was a free open skate, hot chocolate and cookies, and a chance to take photos with Santa.
“There were 194 skaters at the Rec Center. It was amazing to see that!” said Davis, who says they are planning for bigger next year.
“We are definitely going to be looking at new ideas and more floats next year, and are excited to continue to do this for the community every year.”
