WASILLA— Starting Friday, the city of Wasilla is kicking off their annual Summerfest, a series of community events tying in with Independence Day, lasting until July 7. This is one of the biggest events in the city, bringing in large crowds for the iconic parade and fireworks.

This year’s festivities include a carnival with rides, games, food and local vendors. The A-1 Midway Carnival runs from June 29 to July 1 from 3 to 9 p.m. and picks up again from July 4 to July 8 from 12 to 9 p.m.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. on July 4, moseying downtown. Wasilla Mayor Bert Cottle will host the annual Mayor’s Picnic, following the parade. The Independence Day fireworks show will begin at 11 p.m. at the Wonderland Playground. This day will be filled with free food and drinks and activities for the whole family, including bounce houses and a hot dog eating contest. Local bands often frequent the stage during the picnic.

There is no admission or parking fees for the parade, picnic or firework show.

There will be several other events following, including a live concert by David Lee Murphy, a car show put together by the 49th State Street Rodders, a rodeo, and BBQ competition.
