Christmas tree recycling upcoming
Christmas trees can be dropped off at the Palmer Carrs store between Dec. 28 and Jan. 15 for recycling. Trees must be free of decorations. They will be turned into wood chips by local Boy Scout troops. The Wasilla Area Senior Center (1301 S. Century Circle) will hold a New Year’s Eve Bash/Potluck on Thursday, Dec. 31 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the center’s dining room. Billed as “a night to dress up and put on one’s dancing shoes” the event is free and open to the public. Guests are asked to bring a side dish or dessert, and the main dish will be turkey. Wasilla Library closed for New Year’s
The Wasilla Public Library will be closing at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 and will be closed on Friday, Jan. 1 for the New Year’s holiday. The library will be open normal hours (1 to 5 p.m.) on Saturday.
Gardening club to meet
The Meadow Lakes Bloomers Garden Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4 at the Meadow Lakes Senior Center in Meadow Lakes. Guest speaker will be Carol Ryan, who will talk about truffles. Healthy storytime starts Jan. 4
UAF Cooperative Extension will host “Fruit and Veggie Tales: A preschool storytime” at 10:15 a.m. on Mondays from Jan. 4 through Feb. 8 at the UAF Matanuska Experiment Farm, located at 1509 S. Georgeson Road in Palmer. There will be stories, healthy snacks, games, learning and more. Clothing-optional club to meet

Women’s self defense class offered
There will be a “Girls on Guard” women’s self-defense training course from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 9-10, at the Alaska Center for Martial Arts (845 N. Randall’s Way) in Wasilla. The classes are intended for women and girls ages 13 and up. A Level 1 course will be taught on Jan. 9 and a Level 2 course will be Jan. 10. Cost is $45 per student per class or $75 for both classes. ‘Skate the Lake’ scheduled
A ‘Skate the Lake’ community skating party is planned for Saturday, Jan. 16 from noon to 2 p.m. at Wasilla Lake. Palmer’s Alaska Center for Acupuncture and Anchorage’s Seven Sages Internal Martial Arts Studio will host Dr. Joanne Wu from New York for two weekend martial arts seminars on Ba Gua Zhang Small Palm in January. Borough trailhead parking passes available
The 2016 Mat-Su Borough trailhead parking passes are now available. Passes are $40 for the first pass, $30 for a second and are valid from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2016. The borough offers a few ways to get a pass:
• Download the application form from the borough’s website, www.matsugov.us, and mail in payment;
• Fill out a fee envelope and place the payment into any of the borough’s fee stations at the trailheads;
• Pick up one at the Recreational Services office, located at the Borough Building at 350 E. Dahlia Ave. in Palmer.
Ski club offers lessons
The Mat-Su Ski Club is sponsoring adult cross-country skiing lessons this winter. Lessons are offered on five days a week and participants may attend any session at any time. Lessons are offered on Saturdays from Dec. 5 through March 1 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. (skate and classic technique); Mondays and Wednesdays from Dec. 7 through March 2 from noon to 1 p.m. (classic); and Tuesdays and Thursdays from Dec. 8 through March 3 from noon to 1 p.m. (skate). All lessons will be at either Government Peak Recreation Area or Archangel Road, depending on snow conditions. The Grandparents Support Group in Mat Su Meets twice a month at Turn a Leaf Community room next to the thrift store at 404 N. Yenlo in Wasilla.
On the second Saturday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m., relative caregivers and their children enjoy activities and snacks. On the third Friday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, relative caregivers (no children) plan activities and provide support with guest speakers on topics that relate to raising grandchildren that may have experienced abuse and neglect.
