ASAA postpones state basketball tournaments, state cheerleading championships

The ASAA high school state basketball tournaments and state cheerleading championships have been postponed until further notice, according to ASAA.

The tournaments have been postponed due to the threat and potential spread of coronavirus, ASAA officials said. As of Wednesday there was no report of a positive test for coronavirus in Alaska.

The Southcentral Conference Championships, scheduled to start Thursday, at Anchorage Christian School will go on as planned, Houston High activities director Norm Bouchard said.

“That is as of right now,” Bouchard said Wednesday afternoon.

Houston and Redington are both part of the Southcentral Conference. The Southcentral is one of 10 conferences scheduled to host tournaments this weekend. The state issued an advisory Wednesday regarding the high school events. The state is urging people over the age of 60; those with underlying medical conditions; and those with symptoms of an acute respiratory illness or fever to not attend the tournaments.

ASAA also said conference tournaments scheduled after March 14 are also postponed. This includes the Northern Lights Conference, which features Colony, Palmer and Wasilla. Colony was scheduled to host the NLC Championships March 19-21. ASAA’s 1A state tournament was originally scheduled for March 18-21. The 2A tourney was scheduled for March 19-21. The 3A and 4A tourneys were set for March 25-28.
