Wasilla senior Paulina Valencia has been named the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman Student-Athlete of the Week.
Valencia, the defending Native Youth Olympics state champion in the Indian stick pull, went undefeated and beat five opponents in the same event at this past weekend’s Valley NYO competition.
Valencia has an aggressive style that quickly takes the greased pole out of the hands of her opponents.
“She just grips it really hard and is one of the fastest ones I’ve seen,” said Burchell High teacher and Houston NYO coach Jared Barrett, who hosted the event. “With her, it’s a really fast match. She usually has it out of their hands in a second.”
