Athletes win gold at Big C

ANCHORAGE — With the three-time defending state champion in the girls’ 800 meters — former Wasilla standout Morgan Dampier — off running at the college ranks, Colony senior Audrey Michaelson has sprinted in to stake an early claim on the event.

Michaelson posted a time of 2 minutes and 19 seconds to win the 800 during the state’s first big track and field meet of the season, the Big C Relays at The Dome in Anchorage. Michaelson, who has a pair of state titles in the 3,200 meters and another in the 1,600, finished about three seconds ahead of runner-up Jenete Northey of Service.

Michaelson also finished second in the 3,200, with a time of 11:05. She finished three seconds faster than Wasilla senior Jenna Ford. Kenai freshman Allie Ostrander was well-ahead of the competition, finishing first with a time of 10:38.

Michaelson won a state title in the 3,200 last year with a time of 11:04.

Michaelson was one of three Valley athletes to win girls’ individual events. Wasilla sophomore Peggy Mathis finshed first in the 400, with a time of 59.29. She was the only runner to break the 1-minute mark in the event.

Palmer senior Taylor Blake won the girls’ shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 1 inch. Blake’s toss was nearly five feet better than runner-up Redia Hueton of Susitna Valley. Su Valley’s Emily Hartley was fifth.

The Colony Knights led Valley boys’ with a win in the boys’ 1,600-meter relay.

Ken McCoy, Darien Dimmett, Christian Sessom and Daniel Bilafer combined to win the race, with a time of 3:33.50. Bilafer was also third in the 400, and Sessom finished third in the 800 and fifth in the 3,200.

Ben Bayne led the Houston Hawks with a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles and sixth-place finish in the 110 hurdles.
