Athletics keep kids focused on school

Students respond to sports cuts

I have been playing hockey for 11 years. This season I tried out for the Wasilla high hockey team and, surprisingly, I made the team.

It was the funnest sports team I have ever been a part of. Hockey gave me something to do. Everyday, after school, we would have a practice and on the weekends we would compete in games.

At our first home game I was amazed by how many people and students came to cheer for their high school classmates. I think that being in a school sport is a great thing.

Participating in sports helps kids stay in school and it helps them to stay focused on school.
