BARROW — A former Mat-Su Borough School District School Board member who unsuccessfully ran for mayor was shot and killed in Barrow where he had been working as an Assistant District Attorney.
According to media reports, The North Slope Borough confirmed Tuesday morning that Brian Sullivan was found shot to death at a home on Laura Madison Street at roughly 10 p.m.
Alaska State Troopers are flying in to investigate the shooting.
“At the request of the Acting Chief of Police of the North Slope Borough, Alaska State Troopers from Fairbanks will be flying to Barrow this morning,” trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters wrote in an e-mail Tuesday. The North Slope Borough Police Department, “is reporting an adult male has been found dead within a private residence in Barrow and another adult male is in police custody.”
Peters said that the troopers’ Alaska Bureau of Investigation would be heading up the investigation. Troopers will work closely with the Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals.
In 2010 he ran for mayor against Larry DeVilbiss but lost. Sullivan placed second in a crowded field. Prior to that, Sullivan served an abbreviated term on the school board before he resigned due to conflicts with his military career.
In the military he served a tour in Iraq and held the rank of major. Before moving to Alaska with the military he represented the Joint Base Lewis-McCord area in the House of Representatives in Washington, the state in which where as born, according to a website he set up during a stint as a lawyer in private practice.
