Auction benefits two community projects

Mat-Su Covenant Church is hosting a fund-raiser for two church programs, both of which benefit the entire community.

The fund-raiser auction is set for Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

Part of the money raised will help pay for high school students from the Valley and a sister village to go to a youth retreat in Tennessee next summer, but that's not the only project the church is working on.

The second project is the construction of a community building for educational and church uses.

"There's a shortage of meeting spaces and this building will help. A lot of different groups, like homeschool students, have requested space," said Scott Sagle, the youth pastor at Mat-Su Covenant Church. "It will get used by the church, but it will be something that the entire community will benefit from."

Sagle said the building also would be used as an expanded office space for church staff.

Through the auction, people can decide which community project they want to support.

Those donating items for the auction can earmark their donation for either of the projects, and if they don't designate which one they want the money to go toward, the buyer of the item gets to pick which project it supports.

"Either way, all the money raised goes to help the two projects," Sagle said.

Sagle and other auction organizers are looking for as many donations as they can find for the event.

So far, they have a new generator, electronics, crafts, gift certificates for bed and breakfasts, meals, tanning sessions and other items.
