Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Big Lake resident Audrey Lorraine Mahurin, 80, died of natural causes at her home Feb. 6, 2004.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Mahurin was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Bakersfield, Calif.
She graduated high school and attended two years of college in Bakersfield.
Mrs. Mahurin came to Alaska with her husband in 1966. They lived in Juneau and Eagle River before moving to Big Lake in 1981.
She worked as a telephone operator and made airplane parts in Bakersfield during World War II. She was a devoted homemaker, mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Mahurin enjoyed reading, collecting videos of old movies and traveling all over Alaska with her husband who worked with the Parks Service. At one time she hiked the Chilkoot Pass. She also loved to watch the waterfowl on the lake from her recliner.
Her daughter wrote, "I'll miss her sassiness and her love of life."
Her husband Joseph Virgil Mahurin preceded Mrs. Mahurin in death in 1985.
She is survived by her daughter Dona Marie Medgard; sons Robert L. Mahurin, Larry R. Mahurin Sr. and Jeff Hartley; grandson Larry Ray Mahurin Jr.; niece Mei Ling Mahurin; and many relatives in the Lower 48.
