WASILLA — When the Alaska Avalanche started the 2009-10 season with three goalies on the roster, Avs head coach Dave Boitz knew he was going to eventually have to deal one of them.
He just didn’t think it would be his 20-year-old junior hockey veteran.
But last week, Alaska traded Geoff Sadjadi to Janesville Jets for a 2010 tender.
“It was our intention to keep Sadjadi and (also) go with one of our younger guys,” Boitz said. “It’s not that Geoff didn’t play well. Both young guys have been as good, or better.”
Landon Peterson, a 19-year-old from Oregon, Wisc., and 18-year-old Manitoba, Canada, native Kale Robertson are now left to battle for time in the Alaska net.
Both have put together stellar numbers during the early part of the season. Peterson is 2-0-1 with a 2.81 goals against average and .905 saves percentage in four games.
Robertson is 4-1-0, with a 1.55 GAA and .942 saves percentage.
Robertson, who recorded Alaska’s first shutout in more than three years with a 3-0 won over Kenai River in early September, currently leads the 19-team NAHL in goals against average. He’s third in saves percentage.
“Both have been really good,” Boitz said.
Sadjadi is 2-0 after his first two games with the expansion Jets.
