In 2024, the circumpolar world will have its eyes fixed on the Mat-Su Borough as the host of the 2024 Arctic Winter Games, but the real work in making the Games a success is under way now.
The nonprofit Mat-Su 2024 Arctic Winter Games Host Society was recently formed, which kicks off three years of planning prior to the athletes’ arrival. The organization is actively forming a board of directors and a wide range of committees to set the organization’s foundation.
“We are reaching out to interested community members who want to be part of this project, which will have a lasting legacy on our community,” said Casey Ressler, the Mat-Su Convention & Visitors Bureau Marketing Manager and a volunteer on the Arctic Winter Games Board Development Committee. “We are looking for community leaders and volunteers for a variety of positions that will help build the organization, and ultimately make the Games a success.”
The organization is currently accepting applications for its board of directors. Board members are needed with experience in administration, finance, communications, marketing and public relations, sponsorships, venue management, cultural programming, volunteer coordination, and a variety of other skill sets.
“We’re looking for community leaders with expertise in a wide range of skill sets, that when put together, will form a dynamic and productive board,” Ressler said.
In addition to board seats, the organization is seeking volunteers to serve on a number of committees to organize the Games. Sport-specific committees will coordinate individual events, for example, while other committees will focus on things like athlete housing, food services, security, awards and ticketing.
“There will be a spot for every volunteer, whether that is serving as a volunteer at an event during the Games in 2024 or serving on the board and making a three-year commitment,” Ressler said.
