PALMER— Palmer Alehouse owner Cory Hughes recently participated in a question and answer interview to discuss their first annual New Year’s Eve 80s Prom this Friday, starting at 9 p.m. at the Palmer Train Depot.

What’s all going to be happening during the New Year’s Eve 80s prom?

“We’ll have music, a photo booth, and stuff like that. We have a balloon drop planned. We’ve got a live DJ. It’s an 80s prom theme. We should have a video screen up with some the music videos from the 80s. We tried to come up with something silly and fun. It’s kind of a costume party. We’re going to crown the king and queen as well,” he said with a laugh. “We’re going to have a silent auction going on. We have a number of businesses that donated some pretty decent prizes. All the proceeds are going toward the Mat-Su Animal Shelter… It should be a pretty fun event. Hopefully, it will just be some good music, some dancing, and a good time. It’s a simple first year.”

What was the motivation behind starting this event?

“There’s a lot going on in the Valley for New Year’s, but they never really had anything in Palmer. It’s kind of in the same vein with the concerts we do all year. We got thinking, ‘we should really make it a benefit as well.’ We wanted to start something that’ll be a yearly event to offer Palmer for people to come out and join. Every year, we’re not only going to have a party but raise some money for a good cause, whatever it may be. There are so many good causes that are looking for money.”

Is there anything else going on with the event that you want to point out?

“We are offering ride vouchers for Uber and taxi companies. We’re also partnered with a couple of hotels like the Grand View in Wasilla. We’re trying to offer that so people can come out to have a good time and still be safe.”
