To the editor:
I would like to say thank you. I am the director of the Colony High School Knights marching band, “THE Northern Sound.”
Nearly 10 years ago, I moved here to begin a career in this wonderful state. I am blessed to have good neighbors, colleagues, friends and students. I have had the wonderful opportunity to teach in this special community where people work together to overcome challenges and make great things happen.
Recently, the band was able to have their dream come true and participate in the New Year’s celebrations that are part of the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena, Calif. The band performed at Bandfest with some of the best bands in the world and also performed in the 125th Tournament of Roses Parade. We were able to attend the 100th Rose Bowl game, perform in the New Year’s Eve Disneyland Parade and participate in studio recording workshops with professional musicians.
It was a trip that challenged the students (and their director) at every turn. The performing opportunities and overcoming the hurdles they present are instrumental in helping students learn to dream, set goals and work hard. They learn that opportunities are created through determination, teamwork and creativity. They come to understand that obstacles will always present themselves and that preparation and perseverance are essential. The students worked hard and took great pride in representing themselves, their school and the community.
Time and again I have seen our community come together to support students and others who need extra support. In times of trial, tragedy and opportunity, I have observed generosity and dedication that inspire awe. We have been the recipients of that support.
Thank you.
Thank you for your donations of time, resources, money, talents and words. Thank you for supporting the students as they learned, raised funds, practiced and performed. We look forward to representing this community in future events and consider it an honor to have been the first band in Alaska to perform in the Tournament of Roses Parade.
