WASILLA — The Redington Huskies spent the first two weeks of the season making program history. But after back-to-back wins, Redington was handed its first defeat of the season.
“(We) hit adversity for the first time,” Redington head coach Tony Brooke said Monday evening of his team’s 40-8 loss to Barrow Aug. 25 at Redington.
Now, as the Huskies prepare for a home game against Seward, their Peninsula Conference opener, Friday at 7 p.m., Brooke said he hopes the Huskies can use the experience gained against Barrow and apply it in future action.
“As far as it goes, losing stinks, period. But it was a nonconference game. It’s a teachable moment,” Brooke said. “Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes.”
During the first two weeks of the season, Redington quarterback Sam Reed and running backs Kyler Rumfelt and Isaiah Hall combined to rush for 861 yards and 12 touchdowns. Barrow held Redington to 124 yards of total offense.
“They did a phenomenal job,” Brooke said of Barrow.
Brooke said big plays were also key. The Whalers used a big play in the passing game to take an 8-0 lead returned a blocked punt for a score to push the advantage o 15-0.
Rumfelt led the Huskies with 66 yards in the loss. Tommy Long rushed for Redington’s lone touchdown.
