Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Wasilla resident Barry Lawrence Hawkes, 53, died Feb. 8, 2005, of natural causes, at his home.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla, with Pastor Lawrence Golden of Wasilla Lake Church of the Nazarene officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. preceding the services.
Mr. Hawkes was born June 14, 1951, in Shelly, Idaho. He came to Alaska in 1989, left the state for four years, and returned in 2002.
He resided in Nikiski for five years, in Eagle River for three years, in Anchorage for two years, and in Wasilla for the past two years. He was employed by Alyeska Pipeline Service from 1989 to 1998, and for Tesoro, Alaska in 2002-2003.
His family said he loved his family and hiking. They wrote, "He was a wonderful, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend to many. His passion was hiking, traveling and taking fishing trips with his daughters. But most of all, his desire was to make his family happy. We'll miss him with all our hearts and souls. He'll be in our thoughts for the rest of our days."
