The Houston Hawks erased a decades-long drought Friday night. The Hawks scored a 67-64 boys’ basketball win over 3A power Anchorage Christian School.
Kyle McLaughlin used a double-double to help Houston beat the Lions for the first time in at least 10 years.
McLaughlin collected 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Braden Cork finished with 14 points. Cody Wyrick and Cole Taylor added 11 each.
Houston hit nine threes in the win. Cork finished with four from behind the arc, and Taylor had a trio of treys.
Daekwon Houston led ACS with 21. ACS entered the game ranked third in the 3A class by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches. Houston jumped to a 15-10 lead in the first quarter and led 29-11 at the half. ACS scored 24 points in the third quarter, but the Hawks closed the game on a 23-19 run.
In girls’ action, ACS bested Houston 75-24. Katie Richey led Houston with seven points.
Redington sweeps Scammon Bay
The Redington Huskies scored a pair of wins over Scammon Bay during a tournament in Bethel on Friday.
Rubon Bond scored 37 points to lead Redington to a 74-55 boys win over Scammon Bay. Bond hit six three-pointers.
Wayde Bowman added 13 and Jahzeah Williams chipped in 10.
The Redington girls cruised past Scammon Bay 60-20. Lexi Seymore scored 21 points. Abbie Fuller added 17.
The Bethel boys beat Redington 68-34 on Thursday. Bond, Bowman and Tony Rogers scored 10 each. The Bethel girls edged the Huskies 46-41. Fuller scored 18 and Seymore added 14.
Wasilla girls beat Kodiak at home
Jazlynn Novelli used 16 points to lead Wasilla to a 57-26 Northern Lights Conference girls basketball win over Kodiak Friday night at Wasilla High School.
Bella Hays added 10 points and eight rebounds. Sierra Baird finished with nine points.
The Wasilla boys suffered a 35-24 loss to the Bears in Kodiak Friday.
The Chugiak girls beat Wasilla 47-40 on Thursday.
Hays finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Colony boys fall in West tourney
The Colony boys suffered a pair of tough losses during the first two days of the Alaska Airlines Classic at West Anchorage High School.,
East Anchorage’s Damarion Delaney drained a deep three-pointer during the final seconds to stun Colony 50-47 in the consolation semifinals.
Colton Spencer led the Knights with 16 points and six rebounds. Patrick McMahon added 15 points and seven boards.
Trinity International, a team from Las Vegas, Nevada, used a 23-point third quarter to grab a 65-58 win over the Knights during the first round.
Trinity is led by Daishen Nix, an Anchorage native, who is the top high school senior point guard in the country.
Nix, a UCLA commit, scored a game-high 20.
Patrick McMahon led the Knights with 19 points and seven rebounds. Jeremiah Hersrud finished with 13 points and six assists.
