Bear shot after attempted break-in

WASILLA — A man shot and injured a black bear here late Tuesday evening after the bear tried to enter his residence, authorities said.

Grigory Kasacheve, 32, of Wasilla, shot the black bear after it tried to enter a residence along Alan’s Drive, according to Alaska State Trooper media reports.

Troopers responded to the scene and tracked the bear to a nearby tree behind the residence, where Alaska State Troopers killed the bear, troopers said. Officials delivered the bear carcass to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, where officials said any salvageable meat would go to charity.

The bear’s hide and skull will likely make their way to the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous in February 2015, with the proceeds going to the state budget’s general fund.

Specific details about the bear’s motive weren’t immediately available, though troopers and other wildlife officials typically see bear break-ins in connection with food, according to trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters.
