Bears edge Moose in baseball

PALMER — Despite a stellar pitching performance by senior David Media, the Kodiak Bears were able to slip away with a 2-1 win over the Palmer Moose Friday at Palmer Senior Field.

Media pitched a complete game and fanned 10 Kodiak batters in the loss, but the Bears were able to score the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning.

“He pitched a great game,” Palmer head coach David Combs said of Media. “We didn’t execute when we needed to.”

Combs said both Media’s fastball and curve were effective against the Bears.

“The only reason they scored, he got tired and the ball got elevated,” Combs said.

The game was scoreless through five innings. Kodiak took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth and Palmer tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

On Saturday, Homer rallied to beat Palmer 15-8. The Moose led 8-3 in the fifth inning, but the Mariners scored a dozen unanswered runs to steal the victory.

Homer took a 9-8 lead with a three-run homer in the sixth inning.

Senior Brennan Harrison finished 3 for 4 to lead Palmer at the plate. Gus Topp and Luke Heun collected a pair of hits each.

Palmer dropped to 3-3 with the losses.
