Bears knock Moose out of tourney

SOLDOTNA — If it wasn’t for the Kodiak Bears, the Palmer Moose may have been gearing up for a trip to Sitka.

After winning back-to-back games on the loser’s bracket on Friday, Kodiak squashed Palmer’s state tournament bid hopes with a 7-6 win over the Moose during the final day of the Southcentral Conference Championships baseball tournament in Soldotna.

Kodiak rallied with four runs during the final two innings, and scored twice in the seventh to cap a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Palmer.

Palmer took a 6-3 lead into the sixth inning. The Moose trailed early, but exploded with four runs in the fourth. Cameron Jensen reached on a fielder’s choice and scored Palmer’s first run of the inning. Adam Christiansen followed with a double, and later scored on a Keegan Larson single. Larson and Daniel Jackson also scored runs in the inning.

Peyton Garrettson led the Moose with a pair of hits in the loss. Larson drove in a pair of runs. Christiansen scored twice.

After starting its tourney with a rough 15-2 loss to Kodiak in the opening round on Thursday, Palmer bounced back with a pair of wins to stay alive in the race for the conference’s final state tournament berth.

After beating Kenai Friday morning, Palmer got the best of Valley rival Houston, with a 17-6 win over the Hawks.

Palmer plated nine of its 17 runs during the seventh inning. Christiansen was central to the offensive explosion. Christiansen hit a home run and doubled in the inning, and scored two runs. Jensen also had a double and scored a run in the seventh.

Wyatt McKechnie led the Moose with four runs scored. Christiansen and Jensen scored three runs each.

Six different Hawks scored a run for Houston.

Palmer started its day with a 10-9 extra-innings win over Kenai to stay alive in the tourney.

Jackson led off the ninth inning with a single, and scored to provide the game-winning run for the Moose. Christiansen scored three runs in the win. He also hit a home run for Palmer.

Kodiak played Colony late Saturday in the final game of the tournament. The winner of that match earned the final state berth. Results were not available prior to press time. See frontiersman.com/sports for more.
