A relatively small country approximately the size of Maryland, nestled in the midst of France, Germany, the Netherlands and the North Sea, Belgium is a cultural mix of French and Flemish populations, each with their own form of government.

Belgium is known for its exquisite chocolate and more than 350 varieties of beer -- Belgians pride themselves on being the beer connoisseurs of Europe.

Belgium's largest city, Brussels, is an important worldwide business hub that moves at a fast pace. The impressive town hall borders the Market Square, which becomes a colorful carpet of flowers each spring and summer as vendors set up their booths to sell their daily goods.

Brussels is the home of the famed Manneken-Pis, and the lesser-known Janneken-Pis, statues. We were fortunate enough to be in town on a day when a local cycling team was holding a "costume ceremony" for the Manneken-Pis.

Kings, presidents, celebrities and other groups have given costumes to the statue over the years. He now has a wardrobe of more than 250 outfits, including a replica of Elvis Presley's famed white suit.

A visit to the North Sea town of Blankenberge, Belgium's most popular seaside resort, is a welcome change of pace from the flurry of activity in Brussels. An easy day trip from most of Belgium, the miles of white sandy beaches, littered with thousands of seashells, beckon to be walked on. A leisurely stroll through town provides ample opportunity for window-shopping and people watching.

Bruges is an enchanting city that is often referred to as the Venice of Belgium. Surrounded by a tranquil canal, the heart of the city offers a variety of sightseeing activities and an endless supply of shopping opportunities.

Renowned for its lace (often referred to as Battenburg lace), you can find tatters scattered throughout the town practicing their intricate craft.

Bruges is home to the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Originally named the Chapel of Saint Basil, it is well-known for housing the relic of the blood of Christ, which, according to legend, was brought to Bruges after the Second Crusade in 1150. The blood is only displayed during the Friday services.

The Church of Our Lady, located a short walking distance from the Basilica, houses an inspiring Madonna and Child sculpture created by Michelangelo.
