Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Benjamin C. Kirker, 64, died Feb. 17, 2006, at his residence in Houston, due to a heart attack. There will be no services held for Mr. Kirker.
Mr. Kirker was born Jan. 18, 1942, in Argonne, Wis. He attended college at Northern Michigan University and got his bachelor of science and master of arts degrees. He then went on to get his masters in administration at UAA. He served in the Army from 1960-1964 and from 1961-1962 he served in Korea.
Mr. Kirker moved to Houston in 1968. He also lived in Adak, Unalaska, and King Cove. He worked as a teacher in Newberry, Mich., and in Adak and Unalaska. He also was the principal and superintendent in King Cove. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and floating the Yukon and Mackenzie.
His family wrote, ”Ben lived life to the fullest and on his own terms. He pursued every activity with a passion, but with his own unique approach. Ben found solutions we never thought possible. Ben always found quality time for this family and friends. He especially enjoyed fishing trips with his grandson and Dusten's friends.”
Mr. Kirker is survived by his wife, Lorraine Kirker of Houston; son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Sherry Kirker of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughter; Lori Kirker of Wasilla; grandson, Dusten Kirker of Wasilla; brother and sister in law, Ken and Joan Kirker of Crandon, Wis; brother; Robert Kirker of Milwaukee, Wis.; sister, Cora Pietila of Republic, Mich., and sister and brother-in-law, Mickey and Don Lewis of Crandon, Wis.
His ashes will be scattered at Sunshine Creek. Arrangements are with by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory.
