Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Beverly Susan Johnson, 52, died peacefully after a long battle with breast cancer, on Dec. 13, 2002, in her Eagle River home.
A celebration of her life will be held at The Organic Oasis, 2610 Spenard Road in Anchorage, Monday, Dec. 23 from 7-9 p.m..
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Eagle River on Monday, Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m..
Ms. Johnson was born June 1, 1950, in Nanticoke, Pa., and moved to Alaska in 1951 and Eagle River in 1952. She graduated from Chugiak High School in 1968, later receiving a bachelor's degree and teaching certificate from University of Alaska Fairbanks.
She was a licensed massage therapist and for years ran "The Eagle River Center," devoted to teaching many of the holistic and healing arts, massage therapy and yoga. She ran a natural food co-op and was a strong activist for holistic and environmental issues.
She enjoyed both motorcycle and sailing trips out of state and into Mexico with her life-mate and partner Mark Reiss. She also stayed busy developing their "Cloud Nine" property high in Eagle River Valley into a spiritual retreat, and traveling out of state giving lectures and presentations.
She was a very spiritual person, and will be remembered and missed not only by family but also by her many friends and followers.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Rosemary Johnson of Eagle River. She is survived by her loving family: partner Mark Reiss of Eagle River; Son Christopher Benum of Washington; father Robert Johnson of Eagle River; brother Eric and his wife, Shan Johnson of Skwentna; sister Merri Belle and her husband David Dias of Palmer; brother Mark and his wife Marilyn Johnson of Palmer; brothers Kurt and his wife Jovita Johnson, Jeffery and his wife Elizabeth Johnson, and Gregory and his wife Kimberly Johnson, all of Eagle River; nephews Brent and wife Mariah Johnson, Tyson and wife Susan Johnson, David Dias Jr., Kyler Dias, Eric Johnson Jr., Seth Johnson, Alexander Johnson, John Grief and Stephan Johnson; and by nieces Lydia Dias, Stacy Johnson, Amanda Johnson, Shelby Grief, Audrey Johnson and Nina Johnson.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alaska Center for the Environment.
