Regarding Howard Bess’ April 18 article “Telling the truth about Easter,” I agree with him that during the power of ancient Rome, those who were crucified more often than not ended up on the side of the road vulnerable to stray dogs, wild animals and bugs.
However, the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John seem to agree that a respected member of the community, Joseph of Arimathea, asked Pontius Pilate if he could take away the body of Jesus. This request was granted. Jesus’ body was bound with linen cloths with spices, as was the burial custom of the Jews. Perhaps the writers of the New Testament might have expanded on some stories, but there are many historical facts, too.
