Big inning lifts Miners past Pilots

PALMER — The explosive lineup came through once again for the Mat-Su Miners.

The Miners scored five runs in the bottom of th third to key a 6-5 Alaska Baseball League win over the Anchorage Glacier Pilots Thursday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

Cameron Newell used a bases-clearing double to spark the Miners in the big third inning, and rally from a 4-0 deficit. Newell, who raised his team-leading batting average to .480, finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs in the win. The Mat-Su right fielder also blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Jordan Rodgers, Cameron Frost and Paul Panaccione collected consecutive singles in the third to load the bases. Newell followed with a double to push all three base runners across home plate.

Seve Romo earned the win in relief for Mat-Su. Romo pitched four innings. He fanned five and allowed two earned runs. Vince Arobio pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

Mat-Su improved to 7-3-1 overall and 4-2 in league play.
