Big Lake incorporation draws mostly positive comments

BIG LAKE — Most comments posted on the subject of creating a fourth city in the Valley were positive, according to the Local Boundary Commission website Thursday.

Written comments supporting Big Lake incorporation outnumbered dissenting comments three-to-one.

Of a total 16 comments on incorporation specifically, 12 supported the idea of Big Lake as a city. Three comments opposed incorporation. An additional commenter — Houston mayor Virgie Thompson — said she supported the incorporation with some reservations about the size of the area being incorporated and its ability to provide effective municipal services.

An additional four comments concerned the annexation of Knikatnu Tribal Corporation-owned property into the nearby city of Houston. The commission is attempting to address those two boundary issues because the two measures are interconnected, state officials have said.

A preliminary report on the incorporation and annexation will be issued in December, according to commission staff.
