Big plays spark CHS

KODIAK — Chad Lowery is turning into a human highlight reel for the Colony Knights.

The 5-foot-10, 150-pound senior used a pair of long scores to lead the Knights to a 23-6 nonconfernece win over the Kodiak Bears at Kodiak High School on Saturday.

Lowery — who’s become a threat on offense, defense and special teams for the Knights — notched a 47-yard scoring run in the second quarter and returned a punt 92 yards for a score in the third.

Last week, Lowery returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown during a 17-7 win over North Pole.

Matt Jaronik also scored and junior Connor Weihs booted an early field goal to help second-ranked Colony improve to 2-0 overall.

After Weihs kicked a 19-yard field goal with 1:33 left in the first, Lowery gave the Knights the 10-0 lead when he darted through the Bears defense for the 47-yard score early in the second quarter. Lowery’s touchdown was set up by a pair of Kodiak 15-yard penalties earlier in the drive.

Five minutes later, Jaronik — Colony’s senior quarterback — scampered in from 11 yards out to give the Knights the 17-7 lead.

Jaronik posted a game-high 68 yards rushing on 16 carries.; He also completed eight passes for 78 yards.

Lowery was Jaronik’s top target, snagging a pair of balls for 34 yards. Kenyon DePriest and Tyler Jimanez also had two catches each.

Lowery capped the Colony scoring with the 92-yard punt return with 5:44 left in the third.

Charles Johnson put Kodiak, the three-time 3A state runner-up, on the scoreboard with a 3-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Kodiak was held to 59 yards on the ground, but managed to gain 153 through the air.

Colony returns home this weekend to host winless Lathrop Friday at 7 p.m. at Colony High School.
