Big Su Lodge burglarized, cash, liquor stolen from bar

TALKEETNA - Alaska State Troopers are looking for the owner of a pair of yellow leather gloves found at the scene of a burglary at the Big Su Lodge in Talkeetna.

On March 24, troopers received a report from the lodges owner, Barbara Jones, that between the hours of 1 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., someone broke into the business through a side window.

Jones estimated approximately $2,000 worth of liquor was taken, along with an undetermined amount of cigarettes and more than $1,000 in cash.

Trooper Ted Norris said a pair of thick leather gloves, which contained glass fragments embedded in the leather, were found at the scene. The gloves were apparently worn by the burglar to break the window to gain entrance to the lodge.

The gloves are unusual for around here. Were hoping someone might recognize them and give us a call, Norris said.

Barbara Jones and her husband, Troy Jones, have been longtime owners of the roadside lodge, located at Mile 104 Parks Hwy. Jones said the loss from the burglary comes at a hard time, with business slowing due to spring breakup.

We close the restaurant this time of year because its so slow. We just rely on what we take in from the bar. They took the nights till, Barbara Jones said.

Anyone with knowledge concerning the break-in at the Big Su Lodge, is asked to call Alaska State Troopers at 733-2256 or Mat-Su Crime Stoppers at 745-3333.Photo: Alaska State Troopers are looking for the owner of this pair of gloves, in connection with a burglary at the Big Su Lodge in Talkeetna on March 24.
